A Cautious Approach

Reading what the others have said is particularly encouraging to witness such a well formulated case for legalising cannabis. I am fully in favour of bringing cannabis and other taboo practices in line with the state's legal framework. However implementing this social change requires some form of dampning to reduce the shock effect that may accompany it. Such shocks could be avoided through strict control of the sale of cannabis, closer surveillance of the black market and education of the public.

There is a very long way to go, however the worst possible scenario is not to remain as it is (in my opinion) BUT to implement this complex change through a simple law. As many others have pointed out, there are both benefits and risks associated with cannabis and these must be analysed thoroughly within the Maltese context. The mental and physical risks it poses are real and could be detrimental to a portion of users, but this scenario applies to virtually all other things in life. E.G. Some people may respond positvely to prescribed drugs, while others may have negative symptoms (possibly life threatening).

Without strecthing much further. I want to say that legalising cannabis must bring along with it a radical change in culture of medical practioners as these are generally a point of reference for medical advice.

My personal opinion is that all drugs should be decriminalised and that cannabis in particular should be legalised for recreational; medical and industrial uses. This would also generate lots of jobs for also people with criminal records who may struggle to find a job and I believe that reaching out to this segment of society is vital for a sustainable country. There are far more benefits than these mentioned but I believe the others have well described these!
